- Bradbury Residential Complex
The Bradbury Residential Complex is located at 000-100-04850 (the Travel Pod Station).
Travel Pod
A narrow pod station, much less opulent than the Vizierate offices. There is a single pale-blue-tiled corridor that is the entrance to the Bradbury Residential Complex. It is well-lit but slightly grubby, in the manner of well-used commuter facilities.
Bradbury Residential Complex
About 20m along from the entrance, is a cross corridor that stretches away to the left and right for several hundred metres. There are another four cross corridors evenly spaced ahead before ending in a T-intersection. One can see the corridor ahead curving slightly upwards ahead, following the station’s spun gravity curvature.
A small sign reads:
The corridors are typically quiet between Shift changes, but not empty.
Along cross-corridor are doors every 10m, all have a small sign on them. For example, six doors along on the left is 000-100A-04790+0050 (the door opposite is 000-100A-04790+0045) – newly assigned residents may be given a card with such an address and left to their own devices.
An authorised tag opens one’s apartment door.
Typical Apartment
Inside, the apartment he has been assigned is done in an off-white colour; floors, walls and ceilings. All the furnishings are off-white, as are the appliances. The occasional dark spot, draws the eye but is insufficient to give relief from the pale assault. The apartment door is set in an alcove and the apartment starts about a metre from the main corridor, presumably cut into the rock of the asteroid. At least, it’s unlikely one will hear the neighbours.
The apartment is small, perhaps 9m x 4m total. Ahead is a door to a bathroom and toilet, compact laundry built into the wall on his left. The apartment proper stretches to his right, where there is an open-plan kitchen and living area separated by an island bench. The living area includes a couch, a low table, a large high-tech video screen above storage cupboards. A work desk sits alongside the video screen against the wall. Beyond the living area is a door to the sleeping area, which contains a large bed, dresser and built-in robes.
Compared to many apartments this is well appointed – it is entirely self-contained and one doesn’t have to use a communal bathroom nor a communal dining room nor a communal laundry nor a communal entertainment facility nor a communal dormitory.
The video screen doubles as a communicator. One can call people and receive calls through it, and use it as a PubNet connection.
The washing machine is a dry-cycle chemical and UV cleaner unit. He puts his clothes in and they’re treated with chemicals, UV light and a powerful airflow According to the instructions on the machine a full cycle takes about a Task; they should be ready about the time he gets out of the shower.
The shower is of the traditional water variety (one won’t be blasted with chemicals and UV, like the laundry) and comes with thermostatically controlled temperature setting, water pressure selector and no time limit. Incidentally, while in the shower is where one gets to see some effect of GRRAS being under spin gravity rather than the more usual Grav Plates: The water in the shower curves in an arc rather than falls in a straight line, the deflection is about 8cm on a 2m drop from the nozzle to the floor of the shower cubicle.
The kitchen is capabe of being used to actually cook things, but the arrangments seem largely geared toward storage and consumption of meal packs.
