Standard Check Codes

Overview

The Codex has some interesting quirks; one of these is that it specifies a recommended check digit/check code system for use.  The codes are usually represented as alpha characters , but do have a digit correspondence, as shown below.  The codes are a mnemonic for the names of the digits they represent, remembering that the Dominions script is phonetic.

Dominion Check Codes
Digit Code Script Mnemonic
Z Zero
W Wun
T Two
TH Three
F Four
V Five
S Six
N Seven
A Ate
I Nine

The check codes see wide use across the Dominion, from the codes that identify worlds by Octant, to the check codes in the Mer ID.

Algorithm

The codex does not prescribe a particular algorithm, but it does recommend one, and both the Mer ID and ship registration use the ‘standard’ implementation of the Dunn algorithm.  Historically, Enclavers use the same check codes but use Verhoeven to generate them.
